The word "Eyo" also refers to the costumed dancers, known as the masquerades that come out during the festival. The origins of this observance are found in the inner workings of the secret societies of Lagos.The Eyo or Adamu Orisa play is a colourful display of the rich culture and tradition of Lagos by masquerades clad in white regalia symbolically representative of the ancestors of Lagos who have come from the spirit world to cleanse the land and bless the people.
